Professor Steve Dundas Wins Outstanding Article Award

Marine Resource Economics presented the 2018 Outstanding Article Award to OSU Applied Economics Professor Steve Dundas, Roger H. von Haefen, and Carol Mansfield for their article: “Recreation Costs of Endangered Species Protection: Evidence from Cape Hatteras National Seashore,” MRE 33(1):1-25.

The authors use data on participation and location choices of beach anglers to estimate the recreational losses from off-road vehicle access restrictions designed to protect nesting habitat for a number of endangered species at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. They find that these costs are modest compared to the estimated non-market benefits associated with the policy. However, they also show that more targeted policies could generate even greater net benefits.

This annual award recognizes outstanding works published in Marine Resource Economics, with selections made by a committee of associate editors who consider articles published during the award year.
